Why You Should Play Board Games

The reason why you should play board games is because some of the best evenings in our house don’t involve screens, tickets, or big plans. Just a table, a stack of cards, a few snacks, and the familiar sound of game pieces being shuffled, passed, or occasionally launched across the room. Yes, we’ve even had the odd board flip — all in good fun.

Playing board games has become more than just a hobby for my family. It’s something we genuinely look forward to, a way to switch off from the day-to-day and spend proper time together. Whether it’s me and my wife facing off in a tense round of Splendor Duel, or the four of us diving into a game of Splendor or Azul, there’s always laughter, playful competition, and those little moments that make us feel more connected.

With so many things competing for our attention: work, school, devices, and a never-ending to-do list. Sitting down for a game brings everything back into focus. Phones are set aside, and we’re all present in the moment. That kind of quality time is hard to beat. It doesn’t have to be a big event either. Often it’s a quiet weekend evening where we grab a game off the shelf, pass around a bowl of crisps or popcorn, and see where the evening takes us.

Board games also bring out a fun side of everyone. They’re full of little victories, hilarious failures, inside jokes, and surprise twists. Our daughters have surprised us more than once with clever moves or unexpected wins. There’s also something rewarding about watching them develop strategy, patience, and good sportsmanship, even when they don’t win (though sometimes they take it better than the adults…).

Of course, not every game night goes perfectly. Someone might get a little too competitive, rules might be interpreted “creatively,” and every now and then, a tile or token gets launched in frustration. But honestly, those moments become part of the story. They’re the memories that get brought up months later with a laugh.

What’s great about board games is how they grow with you. Our love for them really took off during lockdown, but it’s also rooted in fond childhood memories. Both my wife and I played games growing up, and now we get to pass that love on to our kids. The variety of games out there means there’s always something new to try, from light, quick card games to deeper strategy games that really get your brain working. No matter your age or experience, there’s a game for you.

So, why should you play board games?, my advice is simple: Because it’s fun. You don’t need loads of time, and you don’t need to be a “gamer.” Just pick a game that looks fun and give it a go. You might be surprised how quickly it becomes something you look forward to; a new tradition full of laughter, connection, and maybe even a little bit of chaos.
